Durban Day 4

Posted on 2:00am Wednesday 30th Dec 2009
Tuesday 29th December

After what appeared to be our first night without rain, can't confirm this as I was out for the count feeling rough, we awoke to overhead cloud but with more brightness on any other day, so play looked promising.

We completed our daily walk to the ground and I had to talk the Video camera in at the gate and promised not to use it :-) They let me pass as my excuse for not leaving it in the hotel was accepted.

Prior and Bell continued when they had left off the night before, on top of the bowlers, Prior in particular appeared to be on a mission, looking to score runs as quickly as he could.  England obviously trying to score runs quickly and put the Proteas back in and under pressure as they were now probably the only team that had a chance of victory.

Prior passed fifty before lunch and was looking to close in on a Test hundred when he played on from Duminy, the partnership was 112 and England now had a useful lead.  Bell and Broad were quiet as they closed out before lunch.

After lunch they had obviously had there orders and Broad opened up, hitting a six and four in successive balls before perishing to the part time spinner Duminy.  Swann then joined the frey and hit a quick fire 22, England's lead was now well over 200 !!  Bell just fell short of what would have been a superb 150, Strauss declared shortly afterwards, we had a chance to put the Proteas under pressure.

The opening pair didn't really trouble the batsmen, this wasn't surprising as the wicket had seemed flat most of the last two days.  However, we were about to witness something astonishing, Swann dismissed Prince and Amla to give us some hope, we know had Smith and Kallis at the crease, the scourge of the England bolwers !!

Strauss threw the ball at young broad and he charged into the wicket, he pitched one up to Kallis, he shouldered arms and his off stump went flying out of the ground, the Barmy Army went delirious, a couple more wickets and England would have a great chance.  Then Broad delivered De Villiers and Duminy in the space of two balls and South Africa were on the brink at 44-5.

Swann then trapped Smith LBW and he desperately referred the decision to the third umpire all in vain, he was gone and soon after bat light brought this amazing fourth day to a close.  Not many tourists have experienced an away win in a test and tomorrow weather permitting England will complete the win.
