Gone Fishing

Posted on 8:08am Monday 4th Jan 2010
Saturday 2nd January

After another successful visit to the Casino and another £100 profit, we awoke to a beautiful sunny day and clear skies, it was going to be a hot one. After breakfast we jumped in a Taxi to try and get up Table Mountain. Once again our attempts to reach the top of the mountain to see the incredible views were doomed to failure, forgetting which day it was, everyman and his dog were queuing on the mountain and at the cable car a 2-3 hour queue !!  We aborted our second attempt.

In the afternoon four of us had decided to book a fishing trip rather than go on the wine route trip, the main reason for this was that the forecast was so good and we didn't want to be stuck on a bus for a long period of time.  We wandered down to the Waterfront and paid for our scheduled trip.

Lots of bets were organised, letters in the Captains' and boats' name, time of departure from jetty and arrival time, as well as key bets on fish, first caught, biggest, most variety and most fish. The cruiser pulled out of the harbour and we sped off for our first fishing position, the views back to Table Mountain were stunning.

The boat came to a halt and the bait was on the hooks, in went the weights and the competition was on, now we waited for a nibble.  John managed to land the first fish ahead of Colin by about 5 seconds, it was the one and only catch of the day for John, apart from the bottom of the seabed about 4 times.

I was next to hook a fish, although it was extremely diffcult to tell if you actually had one, they weren't the biggest fish in the world.  Russ finally pulled one in and we all had a fish bagged, Colin and Russ landed another each before we moved position, which took a while as the anchor had become stuck !

Unfortunately after moving we could no longer put the anchor down and therefore we were rocking and rolling much more with the waves.  Colin caught his third and I landed my second and that was it for the day, no more fish.  The rocking and rolling took its toll on me, wasn't sick but my legs were gone.  We then discovered that we had been put to shame by the 9 year old on the front of the boat who had caught 6 fish in between playing with lego.

A great day out, but a quiet night to recover the sea legs !!
